HGR Lacrosse team scrimmagingLacrosse is in the middle of a real shift, and 2026 is when a lot of it starts to land. Here’s what’s actually worth paying attention to.

Sixes is Officially “A Thing”

The 2028 Olympics are reshaping how the game gets coached and played right now. “Sixes” isn’t just an experimental format anymore—it’s becoming a core part of how we play. It’s fast, there’s no room to hide, and you have to be able to play both ends of the field. It rewards athletes who can do everything: handle the ball, get back on D, and make decisions in half a second.  Coaches at every level are looking for players who can move and think in all situations. If that’s not your game yet, it needs to be.

The Crease Rules Changed. Protecting the Goal (and Your Head)

NFHS updated the crease rules for 2026, and referees aren’t giving a grace period. If you’re not the goalie and you’re in the cylinder when a shot is coming, that’s a non-releasable penalty. The old habit of throwing your body in front of a shot from inside the crease is gone. Defenders need to be in position before the shot, not reacting after it. Also, chin strap. Lose your helmet during live play and it’s an automatic whistle.

The Gear Is Actually Getting Better

The newest lines from Maverik and STX are genuinely different from what you were wearing a few years ago. Less bulk, better ventilation, and impact foam that stays light even through a long practice. You’ll feel the difference immediately. Less weight means more movement.

The “Film Study” Revolution

Film study used to stop at the Division I level. That’s over. Apps and video tools are accessible enough that youth players are breaking down their own games, seeing where their footwork broke down or why the slide was late. The lacrosse IQ of players coming up right now is higher than it’s ever been. That’s a good thing if you’re doing the work. It’s a gap if you’re not.

What it Means for HGR

At the end of the day, the flashy gear and the Olympic hype are great, but the heart of the game is still the same: competing hard and having a blast with your teammates. We’re keeping an eye on all these trends to make sure our training stays relevant, but our focus is still on getting you touches, improving your footwork, and making sure you’re ready for whatever the 2026 season throws at you.
